Phase 1: What’s Next in the Development Process?

Over the past two years, the team in partnership with the city and the community has progressed The Bay initiative from Conceptual Master Plans of the entire park and the first phase, to a feasible and developable Implementation Plan for the first phase, and most recently to a recommended Site Plan for the first phase that we can develop into an actual park for everyone in our community to use and enjoy.

Below, you will learn more about what has been accomplished thus far and what is next to come in the process.

Phase 1 Development. Key projects completed or underway to date.
Living Shoreline Restoration
In June 2019, a unique shoreline stabilization solution was installed at the end of Blvd. of the Arts. This was made possible through partnership with the City of Sarasota, Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Coastal Protection’s Resilient Coastlines Program.

This project restored an existing shoreline and replaced an old, crumbling seawall.
Phase 1 of The Bay Park will include further refurbishment to this area to ensure that the Living Shoreline can be environmentally sustained.
Fountain Garden
In January 2020, the restoration of the Fountain Garden at the corner of US 41 and Blvd. of the Arts was completed.
The restoration of the Fountain Garden replaced exotic vegetation with Florida-friendly plants, created a no-mowing and no-fertilizer buffer around the pond to help improve water quality…
… and restored the pond’s historic fountain to enable aeration and improved water quality.
Mangrove Bayou
In January 2020, the beginning of the Mangrove Bayou Walkway project was celebrated with a groundbreaking ceremony.
Once completed in January 2021, the Mangrove Bayou will feature a half-mile walkway that will be accessible for walkers, runners and bikers.
This path will include a Kayak Launch, Hammock Grove, and outdoor “Reading Room” with beautiful views into the Bayou.
